Does this sound familiar?

You don’t have to have the words for it yet.

  • Since the divorce, I don't know who I am outside of being married.
  • The kids are gone and the house feels too quiet.
  • I got the job I wanted, and I'm more anxious than ever.
  • We moved to DFW for work, and I feel completely unanchored.
  • I'm grieving, and everyone expects me to be over it by now.

When Life Changes Faster Than You Can Adjust

Has your life been touched by a major event such as a death, divorce, or layoffs at work? Are you having a hard time moving through and past the emotional turmoil? Do you feel stuck and in need of guidance to get back on track?

There's no denying that life often presents us with our fair share of challenges, usually in the form of sudden change. These life transitions, even the positive ones, can throw us into a tailspin and leave us feeling stressed, confused, and vulnerable. But with the right tools and mindset, you can do more than get through it. You can grow into a more authentic and confident version of yourself.

From my Southlake-based practice, I provide life transitions counseling online to adults anywhere in Texas.

Change Can Be Beneficial

Change, even difficult change that's neither wanted nor expected, can spark personal growth. It gives you a chance to see what you're made of and to become stronger, more confident, and better prepared for whatever comes next. With each new challenge, you develop new skills and a greater awareness of yourself, your family, and your community.

That doesn't mean you have to feel grateful for the hard thing. Growth and grief can sit side by side. Part of our work is making room for both.

Divorce, Empty Nest, and Other Relationship Shifts

As a marriage and family therapist, I pay attention to how a transition ripples through your relationships. A divorce changes your role as a co-parent, a friend, and a family member, not just as a spouse. When the last child leaves home, couples often rediscover each other, or realize how far apart they've drifted. When adult children move out, marry, or start families of their own, the relationship between you has to grow up too. My five tips for a great relationship with your adult child speak to that shift.

Depending on what's happening, it may make sense to work on your own, as a couple, or with adult family members through family therapy.

Grief, Relocation, and Career Change

Grief doesn't follow a schedule, and it isn't limited to death. You can grieve a marriage, a career, your health, a hometown, or the future you pictured. Therapy gives that grief a place to go.

Relocation is another big one. Many people move to the Dallas-Fort Worth area for work, often leaving behind family, friends, and a familiar community. Building a life in a new place takes time, and the loneliness in the meantime is real. Career changes, whether chosen or forced, can shake your sense of identity in a similar way, especially if much of your worth has been tied to what you do.

What Therapy for a Life Transition Looks Like

Every transition is different, but our work together often follows a similar shape. First, we make space for what's happening: the loss, the uncertainty, the mixed feelings you might not be saying out loud anywhere else. Then we look at what this change is stirring up from your past, because transitions have a way of touching old wounds.

From there, we focus on what you need now. That might be practical coping skills for the overwhelm, help communicating with a partner or family member, or time to reflect on who you want to be in this next chapter. I often draw on narrative therapy here, helping you see your life as a story you're still writing rather than one that has been decided for you.

Transitions don't always come with a clear finish line. Our goal isn't to rush you to the other side. It's to help you feel more grounded while you're in the middle.

Is It Time to Talk to Someone?

Sometimes we can handle change and adversity on our own, and sometimes we need a little help. I'm here to lend that helping hand and offer a warm, encouraging place where you can speak candidly and receive care, compassion, and guidance.

Because I work entirely through secure telehealth, therapy can stay consistent even when everything else is changing. If you move within Texas, we simply keep going.

If you or someone you love is struggling with a life transition, please reach out for a free phone consultation. You don't need to struggle alone.

Questions

Life Transitions: common questions

Don’t see yours? Browse all FAQs or send me a note.

What is life transitions counseling?

It's therapy focused on helping you adjust to a significant change, whether that's a loss, a new role, or a shift you chose but didn't expect to feel so hard. We look at what's ending, what's beginning, and what you need in between, so you can move forward with more clarity and less overwhelm.

Do you offer life transitions counseling in Southlake, TX?

Yes. My practice is based in Southlake, and I offer life transitions counseling online to adults located anywhere in Texas. Sessions take place through secure video, which makes therapy easier to maintain during busy, unsettled seasons. We start with a free phone consultation to see if working together feels right.

I just moved to Texas. Can I start therapy with you?

Yes, as long as you're physically located in Texas at the time of each session. I'm licensed in Texas only. Many people start therapy shortly after relocating to DFW, because the move itself brings up stress, loneliness, and questions about identity and belonging.

Can my spouse and I come in together for an empty nest transition?

Yes. The empty nest years can be a chance to reconnect, or a moment when distance between partners becomes obvious. Couples sessions focus on your relationship and how you want this next chapter to look. Couples sessions are $230, and I'll ask for a phone consultation with you first.

How do I know if I need therapy or just more time?

Time helps with many transitions. It may be worth reaching out if you've felt stuck for weeks or months, if the change is affecting your sleep, work, or relationships, or if the people around you seem tired of hearing about it. You don't have to be in crisis to deserve support.

What happens if I move out of Texas?

Because I'm licensed only in Texas, you need to be located in Texas at the time of each session. If you're planning a move out of state, let me know early. We can use our remaining sessions to prepare for the transition, and I can help you think through finding a therapist licensed where you're going.
