Couples & Individual Therapy in Southlake, TX, by Secure Video
I'm a Southlake-based marriage and family therapist offering couples therapy and individual therapy by secure video. You join from home, anywhere in Texas, and we get to work on the space between you.
Couples therapy for Southlake couples, by secure video
I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in Southlake, and I've been practicing in North Texas since 2010. I began my private practice in Denton, worked full-time in Southlake from 2015, and moved my practice fully online in 2020. I've stayed online ever since, because it works, and because it makes therapy possible for couples who otherwise couldn't fit it in.
That means there's no office to drive to. We meet by secure video, and you join from home or any private space, as long as you're in Texas at the time of your session. Couples in Southlake, Westlake, Trophy Club, Roanoke, and the surrounding towns can sit on their own couch, close the door, and begin.
When your relationship hurts, you hurt. Maybe you try to communicate and it always ends in an argument. Maybe you keep circling the same problems without resolution, or you miss the closeness, intimacy, and passion you used to have. You want a better relationship, but you feel like you've tried everything. Couples therapy can give you the chance to rebuild, reconnect, and revive what you have.
Why online marriage counseling fits Southlake life
A lot of Southlake couples are carrying a full load: demanding careers, commutes along SH 114 and 121, frequent flights out of DFW Airport, and the packed calendars that come with raising kids in Carroll ISD. Adding a drive to a therapist's office, plus finding a sitter, is often the thing that quietly ends therapy before it starts.
Online sessions remove that friction. A few other things I've noticed over the years:
- Privacy matters here. Southlake can feel like a small town, even with the bustle around Town Square. Meeting from home means no chance of running into a neighbor, a colleague, or another school parent in a waiting room.
- Home is where the patterns live. The arguments usually happen in your kitchen, not in a therapist's office. Working with you in your own space makes it easier to practice new ways of talking right where you need them.
- Consistency gets easier. Change comes from showing up regularly. When therapy fits into your week instead of fighting it, you're more likely to keep coming long enough for it to help.
If video isn't for you, tell me. Phone sessions are available, and if online therapy truly doesn't work for you, I'm happy to refer you to someone who sees clients face to face.
What we work on in couples therapy
In therapy, we explore the assumptions and emotional blocks that get in the way of intimacy and healthy communication. I get to know each of you as individuals, but I also focus on the space between you, the place where you become we and us instead of you and me. Your identity as a couple is just as significant as your identities as individuals.
Couples usually come to me with some mix of:
- Conversations that have turned into a chore, or into the same fight on repeat (communication problems)
- Conflict that feels unproductive and exhausting
- Distance, a dry spell, or desire that's out of sync (intimacy)
- Rebuilding trust after an affair or another breach
- Big transitions: a move, a new baby, a career change, kids leaving home
- Preparing for marriage or a long-term commitment (premarital counseling)
I draw on the Gottman Method (I've completed Level 1 training), Emotionally Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, mindfulness, and practical skill-building in communication and coping. You can read more about how I work on my couples and marriage therapy page. For couples who want concentrated time, I also offer online couples therapy intensives, a minimum of three hours over one or more days.
Individual therapy for Southlake adults
Not everyone who reaches out is part of a couple, and not every struggle is one you can bring to your partner first. I also see adults 18 and older for individual therapy, online, anywhere in Texas.
People work with me individually on anxiety, low mood, burnout, life transitions, identity questions, and relationship patterns that keep repeating no matter who the other person is. Together we can make sense of your personal story and write a more fulfilling one, learn to cope with overwhelming emotions like sadness, anger, and stress, and build a kinder relationship with yourself through mindfulness and self-compassion. For some clients, EMDR or Internal Family Systems (IFS) parts work becomes part of that process.
If you're seeing me as a couple and individual sessions would help, we'll talk about it openly. My no-secrets policy still applies.
Culturally attuned care for South Asian and Muslim couples
Northeast Tarrant County and the wider DFW area are home to a large and growing South Asian community, with Ismaili jamatkhanas in Carrollton and Plano and many mosques across the Metroplex. If that's your community, you may already know how tiring it can be to explain the basics to a therapist before you can even get to the real issue.
As a South Asian woman, I understand the family and community dynamics that can shape a marriage: the role of parents and in-laws, expectations about duty and sacrifice, what is and isn't said out loud, and how it feels when a couple's choices are visible to an extended family or a congregation. I've worked with Muslim clients (Ismaili, Sunni, and Shia), with couples from different faiths or cultures, and with people who are questioning, reworking, or stepping away from the faith they grew up with. Sessions are in English.
I don't bring an agenda about what faith or culture should look like in your relationship. I bring curiosity and respect. You can read more on my pages about spirituality and multicultural issues.
How online couples therapy works
- A free phone consultation. I require a short phone consultation for all new couples before the first appointment. It's a chance to tell me what's going on and to make sure we're a good fit.
- Both of you, from the start. The relationship is my focus, so I ask both partners to attend from the first session. If individual sessions become useful later, I'll suggest them.
- Secure video. We meet on SimplePractice's confidential telehealth platform, with Doxy.me as a backup. I don't use Skype or FaceTime. You'll need a reliable connection, a device with a camera, and a private room. Both partners need to be located in Texas at the time of the session.
- A steady rhythm. I recommend weekly sessions at first. On average, couples attend at least 6 to 8 sessions, and many choose to stay longer.
Couples sessions are $230 and individual sessions are $200, each 45 to 55 minutes. I'm out of network with all insurance, but I provide receipts (superbills) you can submit for out-of-network reimbursement, and I accept HSA and FSA cards. Details are on my rates and insurance page.
About Shameela
People and the way they relate to each other have fascinated me since I was young. There is nothing more gratifying to me than watching a couple move from disconnection to reconnection.
I earned my MS in Marriage and Family Therapy at Northwestern University's The Family Institute and have been a fully licensed Texas LMFT (#201087) since 2009. My training includes Gottman Method Level 1, an externship in Emotionally Focused Therapy, several programs with Esther Perel on infidelity, desire, and modern love, EMDR, and ongoing study in IFS. You can read more about me and my background.

Individual therapy for Southlake adults
Not here as a couple? This is for you, too.
I work primarily with couples and with individual adults. If you live in Southlake and want space of your own to work through anxiety, low mood, self-esteem, identity, a life transition or the patterns that keep showing up in your relationships, individual therapy gives you that, by secure video from home.
For deeper, focused work, I also offer individual therapy intensives. Individual sessions are $200 for 45 to 55 minutes, and every new client starts with a free phone consultation.

Questions
Therapy in Southlake: FAQs
Do you have an office in Southlake?
No. Southlake is my home base, and I worked full-time in Southlake from 2015 until 2020, when I moved my practice fully online. Today every session happens by secure video (or phone, if you prefer). You join from home or any private space in Texas, so there's no office visit, no waiting room, and no drive across SH 114.
Is online couples therapy in Southlake as effective as meeting in person?
The same people who benefit from in-person therapy can benefit from online therapy. Couples often find it easier to stay consistent when they don't have to commute, and practicing new skills at home, where the arguments actually happen, can be a real advantage. If video truly isn't working for you, I'll help you find a face-to-face referral.
Can we still have sessions if one of us travels for work?
Yes, with one important limit. I'm licensed in Texas, so both partners need to be physically located in Texas at the time of the session. If one of you is in another state for work, we'll reschedule for a week you're both home. Some busy couples find an online couples intensive easier to plan around travel.
Do you work with South Asian and Muslim couples?
Yes. I've worked with South Asian clients and with Muslim clients from Ismaili, Sunni, and Shia backgrounds, as well as interfaith and intercultural couples. I understand the role extended family and community can play in a marriage, and I don't bring an agenda about faith. Sessions are in English. Read more on my spirituality page.
Do you see individuals too, or only couples?
Both. Alongside couples therapy, I see adults 18 and older for individual therapy, online across Texas. Individual sessions are $200. People come to me for anxiety, relationship patterns, life transitions, identity questions, and building self-compassion. I don't work with children or teens.
How do we get started?
Request an appointment and I'll reach out to set up a free phone consultation. That call is required for all new couples before the first session. It lets you ask questions, gives me a sense of what's happening between you, and helps us both decide whether working together makes sense.

Online across Texas
Southlake, let’s talk.
Reaching out is the hardest part. A short, free phone call is all it takes to see whether we’re a good fit, with no pressure and no paperwork.
