Couples & Individual Therapy for Denton, Online
Couples therapy and marriage counseling for Denton residents by secure video. My private practice started in Denton in 2010, and today I serve Denton couples online from my Southlake-based practice.
Online couples therapy for Denton, TX
I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in Southlake, practicing in North Texas since 2010 and fully online since 2020. I no longer have an office in Denton. Instead, Denton couples meet with me by secure video, and you join from home or any private space in Texas.
Has communication become a chore? Does conflict feel unproductive and exhausting? Do you wish for a deeper, more fulfilling connection but aren't sure where to start? Couples therapy can help you rebuild, reconnect, and revive your relationship, whether you've been together two years or twenty.
Where my private practice started
Denton is where I opened my private practice in 2010. Before that, from 2007 to 2011, I led social-skills groups and provided individual therapy in alternative education settings in Denton. Working with people who didn't fit the usual mold taught me to slow down, listen for what's underneath, and never assume I already know someone's story.
I moved my practice full-time to Southlake in 2015 and went fully online in 2020. Denton still feels like home turf, and I'm glad that online sessions let me keep working with couples here. Whether you live near the Square, south of town, or out toward the lake, you can meet with me without the drive down I-35E.
Couples therapy in a college and creative town
With UNT and TWU, Denton has a mix you don't find everywhere: graduate students and faculty, young couples just starting out, longtime residents, and a well-known live music and arts scene around the Square. Those relationships come with their own pressures:
- Two demanding schedules, like a dissertation and a full-time job, competing for the same evenings.
- Couples deciding whether to commit, move, or follow one partner's career.
- Irregular hours and financial uncertainty for musicians, artists, and performers.
- Unmarried, same-gender, and nonbinary or transgender partners who want a therapist who simply gets it.
I welcome all of you. I've worked extensively with artists, musicians, and performers and with LGBTQIA+ clients, and I see adults 18 and up who are working through the transition into adulthood.
What we work on
In therapy, we explore the assumptions and emotional blocks that get in the way of intimacy and healthy communication. I get to know each of you as individuals and also focus on the space between you, where "you and me" becomes "we." I integrate the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, mindfulness, and skill-building. Learn more on my couples and marriage therapy and premarital counseling pages.
Starting strong as a young couple
Some of the Denton couples I hear from aren't in crisis. They're early in their relationship and want to build good habits before the harder years arrive. I love this work. It's far easier to learn how to have a fair fight, ask for what you need, and repair after a rough night before years of resentment have piled up.
Young couples are often working out big questions at the same time: Where will we live? Whose career comes first? How involved will our families be? How do our backgrounds, faith, or identities fit together? Therapy gives those conversations some structure, so they become a way to know each other better instead of a source of anxiety. If one of you is working through something on your own, I also offer individual therapy for adults.
How online sessions work
Every new couple starts with a free phone consultation, which is required before the first appointment. Both partners attend from the first session. We meet on SimplePractice's secure telehealth platform, and both of you need to be located in Texas at the time of the session. Phone sessions are available if you prefer.
Couples sessions are $230 and individual sessions are $200. I'm out of network with all insurance and provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement. See rates and insurance for details.
About Shameela
People and the way they relate to each other have fascinated me since I was young. I hold an MS in Marriage and Family Therapy from Northwestern University's The Family Institute and a BA from UT Austin, and I've been a licensed Texas LMFT since 2009. Read more about me.

Individual therapy for Denton adults
Not here as a couple? This is for you, too.
I work primarily with couples and with individual adults. If you live in Denton and want space of your own to work through anxiety, low mood, self-esteem, identity, a life transition or the patterns that keep showing up in your relationships, individual therapy gives you that, by secure video from home.
For deeper, focused work, I also offer individual therapy intensives. Individual sessions are $200 for 45 to 55 minutes, and every new client starts with a free phone consultation.

Questions
Therapy in Denton: FAQs
Do you still have an office in Denton?
No. My private practice began in Denton in 2010, moved to Southlake in 2015, and has been fully online since 2020. Denton couples now meet with me by secure video or phone from home or another private space in Texas. There's no office to visit.
Do you work with college students?
I work with adults 18 and older, so yes, college and graduate students are welcome for individual or couples therapy. Because I'm licensed in Texas only, you need to be physically in Texas at the time of each session. If you go home to another state over a break, we'll pause until you're back.
We're not married. Can we still do couples therapy?
Absolutely. I work with married and unmarried couples, including couples who are dating, living together, or deciding whether to commit. You don't need a ring or a crisis to benefit from couples therapy in Denton. Many couples come in simply wanting to build healthier habits early.
Do you work with LGBTQIA+ couples?
Yes. I welcome same-gender couples, fully support marriage equality, and work with couples that include a nonbinary or transgender partner. I've worked extensively with LGBTQIA+ clients, and you won't need to educate me about the basics of your relationship. Read more on my LGBTQIA+ issues page.
Can musicians with irregular schedules make weekly therapy work?
Often, yes. Since sessions are online, there's no commute, which helps when gigs, rehearsals, or teaching schedules shift. My evening availability is limited, so we'll talk honestly about timing during your phone consultation. I've worked with many artists and performers.
