Does this sound familiar?

You don’t have to have the words for it yet.

  • I feel awkward and self-conscious in social settings.
  • No matter what I accomplish, it never feels like enough.
  • I'm waiting for people to find out I'm not as capable as they think.
  • I say yes to everything because I'm afraid of letting people down.
  • The voice in my head is harsher than anyone else would ever be.

What Self-Esteem Really Is

Do you struggle with anxiety or depression? Do you often feel awkward and self-conscious in social settings? Are you constantly comparing yourself to others and finding you never measure up?

Self-esteem speaks to how you feel about yourself. When your self-esteem is healthy, you tend to feel confident, centered, and worthy of love. When it's low, you might live with shame and self-doubt, feel critical of yourself, and struggle to believe you deserve love or praise.

I offer self-esteem therapy online for adults anywhere in Texas from my Southlake-based practice. Self-worth is shaped in relationships, so it can be repaired in relationships too, including the one you have with yourself.

Where Low Self-Esteem Comes From

Nobody is born believing they're not good enough. Self-esteem is learned, usually early, from the way important people responded to you. Maybe love felt conditional on good grades or good behavior. Maybe your feelings were dismissed, or you were compared to a sibling, a cousin, or the neighbor's kid who was going to be a doctor. Maybe you were bullied, or you grew up feeling different from the people around you.

Family and cultural expectations play a role too. In many families, including many South Asian and immigrant families, worth gets tied to achievement, sacrifice, or what the community will think. Those values often come from love and hard-won experience. They can still leave you feeling like you're only as good as your last accomplishment.

As an adult, the comparison doesn't stop. Social media, career milestones, and other people's highlight reels can keep an old wound open. Understanding where your beliefs came from is the first step toward deciding which ones you want to keep.

Three Common Ways Low Self-Esteem Shows Up

People cope with low self-esteem in different ways. Most of us lean on one of these three patterns, and many of us move between them.

Imposter syndrome

You project confidence and use your accomplishments to cover the insecurity underneath. You might be a perfectionist, a procrastinator, or both, because if the work is never finished, it can never be judged. Imposter feelings are common among high achievers, including many people in demanding DFW careers, and they often travel with anxiety.

Rebellion

You act as though you don't care what anyone thinks. Feelings of not being good enough may come out as anger or blame, or as pushing back hard against rules and authority. The armor is understandable. It just tends to keep people out.

Feeling powerless

Life's challenges feel bigger than you, and you may find yourself leaning on others to make decisions or to rescue you from hard situations. This isn't weakness. It often develops when you learned early on that your choices didn't matter, or weren't safe to make.

The Cost of Low Self-Esteem

However low self-esteem shows up, it tends to take a toll. You might notice:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • A lack of joy in life
  • Anger, guilt, or sadness
  • Self-doubt and difficulty bouncing back from setbacks
  • Loneliness and isolation
  • Struggles with eating
  • Codependency, or losing yourself in other people's needs
  • Self-harm

If you're thinking about harming yourself, please call or text 988 or call 911 right away.

Low self-esteem also shapes who you choose and what you tolerate in relationships. My post Relationships and the Love You Deserve explores that connection.

How Self-Esteem Therapy Helps

The good news is that self-esteem can change. It shifts as you change your beliefs, your behavior, and how you think about yourself. Because most self-esteem struggles take root in childhood and have been around a long time, it often helps to have support.

As your individual therapist, I'll help you connect the dots in your life, discover where your low self-esteem came from, and build tools to loosen your negative beliefs and critical self-talk and replace them with self-love and self-compassion.

That work may include cognitive therapy to question the inner critic's evidence, Internal Family Systems to get to know the critical part of you (it usually believes it's helping), and EMDR when painful memories keep reinforcing the old story. We'll also pay attention to perfectionism, people-pleasing, and the small daily choices that tell you whether you matter.

When Self-Compassion Feels Uncomfortable

You may have heard that the answer is simply to be kinder to yourself. For many people, though, self-compassion triggers shame. Kindness feels undeserved, or even dangerous. If that's you, there's nothing wrong with you. It's a sign we need to go slowly.

In When Self-Compassion Triggers Shame, I describe a gentler path: being patient with your emotions, getting curious about the different parts of you, and offering them understanding one at a time. Often, compassion finds its way in through that back door.

If you're ready to develop a healthier, more realistic sense of self, reach out for a free phone consultation. We'll meet online from wherever you are in Texas.

Questions

Self-Esteem: common questions

Don’t see yours? Browse all FAQs or send me a note.

What does self-esteem therapy in Texas involve?

We'll explore where your beliefs about yourself came from, how they show up today, and what keeps them in place. Then we'll work on changing them through self-awareness, compassion, and new ways of thinking and acting. Sessions are online for adults anywhere in Texas, and individual sessions are $200 for 45 to 55 minutes.

Is imposter syndrome a sign of low self-esteem?

Often, yes. Imposter syndrome is the feeling that your success is undeserved and that you'll eventually be found out. Many very capable people live with it. It usually reflects a gap between your accomplishments and your inner sense of worth, and therapy can help close that gap so success actually feels like yours.

Can perfectionism really be a self-esteem issue?

It can. Perfectionism often protects against the fear of not being good enough. If every mistake feels like proof that you're failing, you'll work hard to avoid making any. In therapy, we can get curious about that perfectionist part, understand what it's guarding, and help it relax its standards without losing your drive.

Why does self-compassion feel so hard for me?

If you grew up learning that your feelings didn't matter, or that kindness toward yourself was selfish, self-compassion can trigger shame instead of comfort. That's common and understandable. We can start somewhere that feels less loaded, like getting to know your inner parts, and build tolerance for kindness gradually.

Do you offer self-esteem counseling in Southlake?

Yes. My practice is based in Southlake, TX, and I provide self-esteem therapy online to adults located anywhere in Texas. We'll meet through secure video, so you can attend from home or another private space. We begin with a free phone consultation to make sure we're a good fit.
